Harry Potter in Egypt? Where can I buy it?

Country forums / Africa / Egypt

I usually do the midnight bookstore run when HP books come out and then hole up for the weekend reading it. However, I will be in Egypt when the last one is relased. Where can I go to buy it? Can I put my name down anywhere? Oh, and I need it in English.

Ok, this is priority people! I posted this 11 whole minutes ago!

:D

1

sorry cant help - will proably be able to downoad it from somewhere within a few hours of release!

2

Ohhh I didn't think of that. However, I want to curl up on the beach with it hopefully, so if anyone has any idea please let me know.

Cheers caroline

3

Pretty much the best books shops are the American Uni and around Talet Harb in Cairo-
Good Luck

4

Is anyone in Cairo that would be willing to call the AUC bookstore for me and ask if we will be able to get it on the release day and if we need to put our names on a list to do so? Please, pretty please?

5

Is this a Troll ????

Main bookshops for english books in Cairo are the shops of the American University in Dowtown (Midan Tahrir) and somewhere in Zamalek Diwan library in Zamalek Virgin Megastore in CityStars.

As for having Harry Potter on the first day... hey girl, you're in EGYPT there, not in the UK. A good opportunity to read Egyptian litterature and become a little more... errr... educated ?

6

This is important- please reply!!

7

Err educated in what Catw?

Raki, it is so important. Thanks for the bump :) Great to see you again.

8

And catw, since you know the main bookstores for english, do you think they will have the harry potter available?

9

Didn't know people could be so addicted to these things. But hey, it does no harm to anyone.

10

But it's the 7th book strawberita! Simply a must have, even if I have to get it sent dhl - hopefully wont have to.

As far as I can find out, it will be released in all English-speaking countries on July 21. I sincerely doubt that copies will come to non-English-speaking countries that day. You might get in touch with managers of the English-language bookstores in Cairo to see if any of them have actually ordered it. Even if any have, there will probably be a delay.

13

I am having a hard time calling over ther ainzrka, tht is why I want to find out the details. Thank you so much for attempting to find out.

If anyone call call the AUC bookstore or others mentioned, that would be really nice.

14

Here is a contact list if anyone is willing.

15

Summer session is on, so surely you can reach somebody. Have you tried the e-mail address? The only numbers you should bother with are the ones for the manager and Special Orders.

16

Yea but calling from this phone (it is on the school system) is weird...I have to type in a bunch of codes and things and it just doesn't seem to work. It just rings and then goes flat. Tried the email addy, no response yet.

17

I also seriously doubt they'll have the book on the first day, except if Virgin in Citystars for instance wants to do a special event. But you're no match for the spoilt rich Egyptian kids who might be there if this does happen.

Honestly, if your main purpose in life is reading "harry Potter", why bother travelling to Egypt ? You had better go to one of these bookshops and buy the trilogy of Naguib Mahfouz (who was awarded the Nobel Prize). Or read the great "Yacoubian building", a bestseller published last year which is an extremely exciting novel and which tells you everything about the real Egypt (islamism, social hypocrisy, police state...). Might be less rich in flying broomsticks than "Harry Potter" but should leave you with a little more culture in the head.

18

Let it be clear : I've nothing personal against Harry Potter and perfectly undertand it can be an exciting reading - don't want to make a foe out of a magician, wouldn't be cautious. However I think you should concentrate of the great luck you'll have to be in Egypt and let little children be obsessed with buying Potter's book among the first.

19

I don't really care to let the little kids have the book first. I want it then! Me me me.

I am not joking actually.

Sweetie catw, I think I am quite comfortable in saying that a. I am fairly educated in the region especially on the topics of islamism, police state, and a bunch of other topics. Although I really don't have a clue what you mean by 'social hypocrisy'. and b. not everyone goes to Egypt solely for tourism . Furthermore, if I want to read Harry Potter why would you even bother commenting on my choices? I am asking for a bit of simple help, not your standards of what I 'should be doing'. I know that obviously I am just a dumb tourist who hasn't got a clue compared to your esteemed self..

And quite frankly, 'seriously doubting' is not the kind of help I am looking for. If you have any further actually useful information like the list of stores, please share it, and spare me the highbrow attitude. k?

Cheers.

20

Virgin is actually a possibility, so check it out.

But we can't always have everything we want in life, and some choices make conflicting ones impossible. Learning that is part of growing up.

21

I agree ainzerka (and I am also skyprincess). However, learning to not make crass assumptions about people is also a part of growing up.

22

Possibly Sky prefers to read for pleasure rather than hoping that people will be impressed that she was reading the trilogy of Naguib Mahfouz should she suddenly depart this life.....................

23

. . . . .

24

Eh, I would be embarassed Raki. That is the kind of thing tourists do while sitting around his restaurant or Fishawy hoping to meet 'real egyptians'. If I am gonna go out, I wanna go out after I find out if dumbledore really died darn it!

25

Oh I see itsa...made...an...appearance...

heya girlie...!

26

I think you should be more open minded and accept an honest advice.. you should read something more AD HOC in Egypt... hth

27

sample 1

28

Itsa, that will be next on my list ...right after this one

I fail to see how they fit into what I should be reading in Egypt though, as apparantly the place one is located in should determine their choices of material.

29

I do not see how that suits your being in Egypt though as opposed to my chose which is based on their culture.

I still think you are hard headed and should take advice for good :D

. . . . . .

30

How is that based on their culture? Maybe 2,000 years ago! (ok 1400 to 1100).

I see no pyrmids in that book. Unless it is some karma sutra type of thing maybe. You little perv you.

Besides, I thought my choice along with yours would make for a nice well balanced perspective.

31

Sexual adventures of HP in Egyptian Pyramids?????

OMG!!!! interesting twist
I think they kill him in the last version though at least that is what my friend at bookstore told me.. he is sorrounded by HPbooks and wants themall thrown from here to Egyptp so you will most probably find one there at least!!!!

32

ermmm #23 has a good point.. but I can not tell what Yasmeen prefers though.. I think she is more into culture...

33

"social hypocrisy" = the Egyptian society is obsessed with appareances (the bride must (pretend to) be virgin, a respectable woman must wear a veil, men harm themselves on the upper face voluntarily in order to make a scar that will have people believe they pray 5 times a day, neighbors spy on neighbors, people drink alcohol but only once hidden...). This obsession with appareances is a quite recent phenomenon and many Egyptian intellectuals consider it is destroying their country from within and that it comes largely from the influence of Wahabism (the radical form of Islam imported from Saudi Arabia).

34

And how is this diferent from other socieities social hypocrisy? Every society has it's signals. And how recent are we talking about as for it being a social import because some of those things have been an integral part of the society for millenia. I think it is simplistic to lay all of it at the feet of the Wahaabis although it would be nice to.

By the way, the understanding of islam you are referring to is a combination of originally Egyptian salafist thought exported to SA and mingled with Wahabbist ideas and attitudes, then reimported back to Egypt and other places in the world. Specifically the ideas of Sayid Qutb and his book Milestones, the influence of Pakistan's Mawdudi, along with Ibn Wahab and Ibn Taymiyya meshed together to form the current day salafist thought which ranges from jihadists on one end of the spectrum to peaceful people who simply seek a return to a utopian ideal of the past on the other end.

35

Skyprincess wants to read Harry Potter. So what. So do I.
Its funny, its well written, and I want to know what happens before anybody else gets the chance to tell me and spoil it.

I read a lot. More, and more widely than most other people I know. I read books because I think I will be interested, challenged or amused by them. Not because I feel obliged to by someone else's idea of what is politically correct.

As I have read several of Naguib Mahfouz' books, and The Yacoubian building, may I please be given the all clear to read Harry Potter ?

36

I just told my mother exactly what you said, genghis - that I didn't want anyone else to spoil it for me before I could read it. Besides it has become my cultural tradition to curl up with it the weekend after it's release.

Catw, I think what astounds me about your replies to me is embodied in this line that you wrote, "Might be less rich in flying broomsticks than "Harry Potter" but should leave you with a little more culture in the head."

That is pretty condescending don't you think? Pray tell me what aspects you think I should educate myself in....other than Mahfouz.

37

Awww, seems we ran off catw. I was hoping she/he would come back so we could have a lively debate. Rats.

38

Sky.... just as a footnote.... if you are trying to call any Cairo number they have all been recently given a 2 or a 4 before the old number... i.e. if you are trying to call 7975967 ( AUC bookstore office ) and it does not work then try 27975967 or 47975967. Thus all Cairo numbers should now have 8 digits not 7 like before.

39

Ahh, maybe that was the problem. I called a 2 for the city code when calling international but mabye I needed to add another 2 or a 4 to the number.

Thanks for the tip! I think I found a book though, thanks to OnlyMark.

40

I guess catw is not going to come back to the thread? Tis a pity.
