guide book

Country forums / Africa / Morocco

I think that this trip to Morroco will spell the end of thelonely planet guide book.

It seems that there were two women traveling on an unlimited budget. All the special squares on the best place to stay...

For example in Tarfaroute there is a good hotel Salama with air; perhaps heqting and almost at budget prices.

They reported on the one for over 100 dollars american.

Also the liberal slant on the faux guides...I think the Rough Guide has it right...petty thieves..In Nicaragua they follow one to a hotel and demand payment...Thats theft, poor or not...

The rough guide also lists more places that I would stay at...Why are these not in the lonely planet.

Like I said this tripe opened my eyes to the LP guide:::

Next time out The Rough Guide:::Try it:::

I have used both the LP and RG books on Morocco for years. Each has its advantages. I do think the city maps in RG are better but otherwise I really haven't found significant differences.

The quality of information seems to alternate between the L.P and R.Guide depending on what country your talking about. I totally agree with your findings on the Morocco L.P. Definantly a move away from budget travel. I would suggest to reflect the type of tourist who tend to go Morocco.

I suppose it can be defended by saying it's only a 'guide' book. I did notice some glaring miss information in the budget accomadation sections which I won't bore anyone with now.

The Big things they got wrong is that L.P gave the impression Dades Gorge wasn't worth the trip where I found it was the more pleasent of the gorges. Tangier is too much trouble where I found it far less hassle than Fes or Marakesh (but less interesting). And yes, they are very liberal with 'dangers and annoyances.'

I find that that most carry LP so everyone goes to those hostels...I've only ever bought one (South America) just because it has was the most comprehensive and good info on transportation from different cities. I typically get Let's Go and Moon's (Moon's book on Peru is the best).

This time around I bought a used guidebook online for Let's Go 2003 for Spain, Portugal and Morocco (they're the only one with that combo...that I could find and there's no recent publication).

I always do my research beforehand and use www.hostelworld.com for recent recommendations on lodging. I just take guidebooks as a backup for the maps, sight and historical info...I rarely use guidebooks for food or accommodation tips. I get most of my tips once I'm there from other travellers or hostel staff.
