Gonder to sudan border

Country forums / Africa / Ethiopia

Hi, any information re Gonder to Sudan border would be appreciated.
Transport, money change, accommodation etc on to Khartoum.
Thanks.

Never used it but I had read some reports and advices.
You have public connections and you can find hotels on the way.
I was in Ethiopia and Sudan but always for separted trips.

From Gonder bus station there are frequent minibusses to the border with Sudan. ticket costs 100 Birr with
blue dolphin minibus, 1st level. From the border bus station you can take a tuktuk or walk to the border 1 km
away, checkout Ethiopia, checkin Sudan. Painless and easy, moneychangers are around. 1 Dollar - 8,50 Sudanese
Pound, 1 Euro is 10 SP, border rates are probably worse.
Once in 'Sudan, there are minibuses to Gedaref, 20 Sud. Pound, about 3 hrs. Here you can stay overnight or take
a bus to Khartoum, 85 Sud. Pound, 7 to 8 hrs. You will arrive at Mina Bary bus station in Khartoum, 7 km south of
the city and can take a tuktuk to the centre for 25 Sud. Pound.
Good luck!

I agree with everything above. Getting to Sudan from Ethiopia is easy to do with a mini-bus. Just leave Gonder as early as possible. I left too late in the morning and missed the last bus in Sudan that was leaving the border.

Sudan is awesome by the way! You'll have a great time there. Make sure you visit the pyramids!

Xsaintjack, thanks for the excellent rapid reply of information.
Any idea of what the Ethiopian side exchange rate is for Birr to Sudanese £.
Thanks.

By the way, if you do get stuck at Metema/Gallabat border, there is a new & very clean hotel on the Ethiopian side (Metema)called the Bahir Dar Hotel. There is no sign & it's not on the main road but up one of the bumpy dirt lanes. Ask a bajaj driver to find it. It cost birr200 for a spanking clean single room with outside shower, but an oasis for a border area. Very friendly family run it & there are 11 rooms in a courtyard with space for 3 vehicles to park & very secure. They also have cold beer & will cook for you.
To find it, look for the Vetenary Pharmacy sign about 600m from the border on the Ethiopian side (Metema) on the left. Go up the dirt track at the sign & turn right. A few metres along is a cream building with a wall topped with razor wire & a pale green gate.
