Getting money in Uganda

Hi

Could some one tell me how to pay for things in Uganda.
Do I have to take out a great wad of dollars from england? I need around $3000 for the trip.
How do people do it?

I paid $$ cash to the tour operator and Ug. Shs. from the ATM machine for everything else. ATMs all over the place.

Take some USD dollars for the 50USD visa and for emergencies. Use your normal bank card (visa is normally better than Mastercard in Africa) to withdraw money from your UK account as and when you need it. There are plenty of cash machines in Uganda. They're everywhere in the big cities. Don't carry large amounts of cash (USD or otherwise) with you.
