Can anyone give me an idea of the cost of hiring a grand taxi for a trip from Fes to Volubilis to Meknes, touring Meknes for about 4-5 hours and then on to Casa. We don't necessarily need and English-speaking driver because we can do without a guide or with a local guide in Volubilis and Meknes
Grand taxis aren't hire cars. Nor do they use a clock. They run along specific routes for fixed prices per person. You either need to hire a car with driver or submit yourself to the vagaries of Moroccan public transport - often slow but always interesting. | 1
Hiring a grand taxi for your itinerary may cost you up to 2000 Dh.To do it cheaper ,I suggest to get the train to Meknes then get a grand taxi with other passengers to Volubilis then get the train again to Casa.Use www.oncf.ma to find the schedule. | 2
The train is a lot more comfortable than the grand taxi and as stated will be much cheaper. | 3
Hmmmmm....I have hired a Grand Taxi for my sole use to get from one point to another...and negotiated the price (it was not fixed). I guess I would ask one of the Grand Taxi drivers in Fes about it. Who knows? He may be willing to do it. But I agree the train-taxi-train option probably will be much cheaper. | 4
Well, that's true. But an area like that where you get tourists there should be a standard rate for the taxi from say Moulay Idriss to Volubilis. Like going out to the Todra Gorge from Tinerhir, for instance. It depends where you are. | 5
i too hire grand taxis with driver to get from point A to B just for me and my family when I don't feel like dealing with the train schedule or if it is a holiday and the train might be packed. It can eat up some dhirhams but sometimes it is worth it to me. I do always make sure the price includes the gas and any speeding tickets the driver might get but I have had some wonderful drivers who I continue to use year after year and keep their cell phone #s. From Moulay Idriss just to Volubilis I have at times paid up to 50DH to be dropped off. Keep in mind, taxis don't hang around in front of Volubilis so once you are dropped off there, you are going to be walking when you leave unless you can negotiate something with the man dealing with the taxis in Moulay Idriss to send another taxi for you at a certain time. I always go to Volubilis from Moulay Idriss but am staying in a guesthouse in Moulay Idriss so I arrange for the hosts at the guesthouse to send one of their kids over in a taxi to pick me up at a certain time. On a pretty day it is a nice walk but in the heat of August....no way. | 6
