ferry Mwanza-Bukoba

Does anyone know if the ferry between Mwanza and Bukoba still runs?

Thanks dagga_boy! But someone told us the ferry is in dry dock for maintenance since February... so not sure if the webpage is up to date.

I traveled on MV Victoria in 2013 and really enjoyed it. Still have Tz friends in Mwanza I will ask them for updates

Hi just got the msg back from my friend, he says that MV Victoria is off for maintenance work but that MV Serengeti is running. Just need to check with him that his goes to Bukoba !

there are buses going from Bukoba to Mwanza which take less time and cost less.

Yes the Seregeti goes to Bukoba, it is replacing the Victoria for the time being.
I agree that the bus is cheaper and quicker but travel on these great old ferrys is a wonderful experience and a lot more comfortable!

Yeah I totally agree - we'll take the ferry! Is it safe or do we need to take life-jackets? :)

Don't know about the MV Serengeti but MV Victoria was great, comfortable bunk beds, shared toilets but not too bad and pretty good food.
I have also traveled down Lake Tanganyika aboard the MV Liemba which was just the most amazing 3 days. This year I am hoping to catch the MV Songea up Lake Nyasa!

The MV Liemba has been on lease handling refugees from Burundi for the UN refugee organization for the past month or so. Since the Liemba is just one of the ships operated by Marine Services Company, Ltd:

With the Liemba out of service they may be changing the schedules for other ships in their handling.
The Liemba is supposed to be returning to her previous schedule according to a Facebook page.
