Ethiopia a bit off the beaten tracks

Country forums / Africa / Ethiopia

Ethiopia is a great country to travel, especially for solo travellers there is no problem at all. The only thing - at least for female solo travellers - is: you have to get used to getting proposals every day from males of any age ;-) But never had a pushy experience.
Surprisingly for me was, that everybody seems to head for Simien Mountains to to hike. Somehow I am kind of glad that when I stayed in Ethiopia (mid of October to mid November 2016) it was just when the state of emergency was announced and Simien was not recommended for a visit. So I went to Lalibela not only for the famous chruches but discovered the surrounding being an absolutely stunning and amazing place for hiking, experience the life of the farmers in the highlands as those living in Lalibela, their hospitality and warm heart. And I learned, that it is not (yet) overrun by hikers though there are marvellous places like Hudad or Mount Aboune Yousef (3rd highest mountain of Ethiopia) as well as the many to discover little and big sensations.
My second alternative destination due to state of emergency was Bonga in the region Kafa, where I found quite a few western development workers and coffee traders but not many tourists: rainforest, wild coffee, wild honey, holy hot springs..... a natures paradies inviting for hikes in a so different scenery from the one around Lalibela.
These are only two highlights well worth going and well knowing, that there is so much more....
