Don't stay at the Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge!

Country forums / Africa / Tanzania

After having reserved a double room and paying over $200 U.S. for one night at the Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge, imagine our surprise upon checking in when my friend and I were told we still owed another $230 U.S. for the room. It was a $225 U.S. charge PER PERSON per night, whether we took one room or two! I've never heard of such a scam. There was nothing mentioned of this over the phone when we made our original reservation for our double room.

Add insult to injury, the room was worse than any motel room I've seen. Dingy bedding, stained and cigarette-burned carpets, rust-stained bathroom. Absolutely appaling for over $400 U.S. per night.

As for the "wonderful" view, arriving after dark and leaving first thing in the morning for our game drive, we didn't get to see anything spectacular. Lastly, the breakfast buffet was spartan at best and the hot food was cold. I would SERIOUSLY NOT RECOMMEND this hotel to my worst enemy.

Needless to say, our next night at Ngorongoro crater, we stayed at the Sopa Lodge for a mere $220 for a double room, and this time, it wasn't per person! If only we had known!

I think you might have been done. Africa Point as an example show the room to be at most 260 usd.

Hi
You were most definatly cheated why not get in touch with the head office.
Did you get a receipt?

Yep, sorry, you got the "mzungu special" on that one. Did you speak to the manager? I had trouble there with the price of internet time ( i think it worked out to $35 US per hr.) but got in touch with the manager who was both friendly, and helpful, though that did not change the price!

That said keep in mind this is the oldest hotel on the crater, the view truly is magnificent if you have time to enjoy it, and most people only end up there if either they book late, or super budget.

cheers
