Desert travel

Country forums / Africa / Egypt

I'm flying into Cairo tommorrow evening. Will stay in Cairo for about 3 days then plan to head across to Siwa. Is it possible/difficult to go from Siwa overland via a couple of oasis and end up in Luxor or thereabouts. From there I would like to make my way towards Abu Simbel before somehow getting across to Dahab and Mt Sinai. Anybody interested in this type of trip or alternatively is there anybody who can offer me some guidance on how to accomplish it. (I am backpacking but where required will spend money ie for flights if necessary.) I have about 14 days to see as much of Egypt as I can.

Some info here

mohamed - it seems your old handle has been banned due to your advertising. How long will it take for this one too?

I was trying to make the same trip from Siwa to Luxor 2 years ago. At the time it was very easy to get a tour that drove you from Siwa to Bahriya and the sounding sites (white desert, black desert, crystal mountain, etc). It was rather expensive (about LE2000 per car) and would have been cheaper if you could split the cost with others. We seem to have missed all the people that were going at the same time as us but you can easily meet people if you ask around at palm trees.

Make sure you have a look a the car before you put your money and passport into their hands.

From Bahariya (or Farafra) the fastest, easiest and safest way to get to luxor is to go back to cairo and catch the overnight train down.

Things may have changed but this was the situation back then.

Many thanks for the replies. onlyMark/vanandalan - your info was/is great and has given me the confidence to head off to Siwa. Kinghead Egypt - thankyou for your offer. By sheer co-incidence I had lunch today in Cairo with a fellow Australian whom I had never met. She had done the trip that I would like to do only a few weeks ago. I'll start heading that way tommorrow and look for like minded travellers loitering around palm trees.
