Cycling in Egypt - current situation?

Country forums / Africa / Egypt

I have been planning to cycle from Alexandria to Aswan (or Cairo to Aswan).

Has anyone done this, have some handy tips about what to avoid, what type of tyres/tires are best, best places to stay etc? And, given the current political situation in Egypt, how safe or unsafe is it really outside of the main hotspots?

Thanks,

David

Try posting on the forum "On Your Bike". It is specifically for cyclists.

The problem is not the political situation, the problem is the total lack of safety on the road. People drive like nuts, the last thing they expect is to see someone on a bicycle on a road.

I'm keeping an eye on the situation myself as I was planning on cycling from Port Said to Luxor/ Aswan (on my way to Cape Town) in November. This is as good a forum for this sort of question as the On Your Bike section as it's more about the overall situation for travelling.

As to traffic being the danger... meh, I've been to Egypt many times, the traffic is bad but not as bad as, say, down-town Delhi or Vietnam.
