Cheap Hotel Near Airport

Country forums / Africa / Madagascar

Any recommendations for cheap hotel (20K) near airport? I'm arriving late at night and don't want to take a taxi by myself to Tana. I'm also considering sitting in airport all night, as another poster said people do this--but does anyone check if you actually have a ticket for an early morning flight and kick you out if you don't?

I'm in same situation, there are several hotel nearby - I've booked at the Cheval Blanc by email - they aren't dirt cheap - about USD35-50 but better that camping out in the car park - they provide free transfers too - others are in Bradt's and Lonely Planet. Hope this helps.

I also find the Cheval Blanc quite a pleasant place to stay - it's clean, friendly and comfortable enough, it takes their transfer less than ten minutes from the airport, and they both pick you up from and, if necessary take you back to the airport for free.

Seems to me that the previous poster might possibly be overestimating the value of the ariary. I paid for rooms there for myself and various family members in September and again this month, and the price for all of their rooms was 46500 ariary per room and night, including the "vignette touristique". That works out at roughly 17 euro / 24 US dollar per night.

The only other explanations I can think of why they would quote anyone so much more are that either they start to charge a premium rate around Christmas, which is when the previous poster is going - that would be an unpleasant trick - or that all of the actual hotel rooms were full. There is a bungalow annexe with several rooms at the back, but only suitable for occupation by one group - maybe they wanted the full price for that.

At any rate, their e-mail booking system is efficient, and you can also pay by visa if you want - and in contrast to just about everywhere else in Madagascar, they didn't impose a surcharge when I paid by card.

On your other point, a couple of people who accompanied me on one trip did spend the night at the airport - they were too tight-fisted to pay for the hotel. They hung out in the restaurant in the international terminal. Nobody bothered them, nobody checked up on them, but they weren't very comfortable and didn't sleep much either.
