car ferry to egypt?

Country forums / Africa / Egypt

Hello all. My girlfriend and I are planning driving from London to Cape Town leaving just after Christmas 2015. The major issue seems to be getting to Egypt. Does anyone know if a car ferry will be working from anywhere in Europe to Egypt at the end of 2015 or early January 2016? Many thanks

Do a search on here...last I remember, the only ferry was from Turkey.

I also remember that importing a car into Egypt was a very time-consuming and expensive business. ....

Thanks Luca. So far it looks like even the Turkey ferries don't allow disembarkation in Egypt. Will have to see about shipping it there in a container.. Unless anyone else has better information.

No, no ferries to Egypt anymore. The service from Iskenderun was discontinued in 2011 (I think) and has not been reinstated. It is a (the?) major problem for a Cairo-Cape route given the problems in Syria and Libya.

There is NO Car Ferry going to Egypt from Any where in Europe and has not been for many years.
you can not go to Syria or Libya so there is no way overland.
you have to Fly to Egypt then go Overland

Thanks everyone. Given we have already bought an old land cruiser and started fitting it up we have only 2 choices. Send it by freight to Alexandria and hope it gets there and out in 1 piece. Or go the West Coast route. The West Coast route is much longer obviously and the difficulty is in getting visas for places like DRC, Cameroon and Angola..

Anyone have any experience of sending a car by freight?

Unless this comes to fruition any time soon:

Thanks. That would be excellent news if it comes off.
