Can i use my Mastercard in Uganda and Rwanda (not my creditcard)?

Country forums / Africa / Uganda

Hi, i have a Mastercard debit-card (if that;s what you call it, it's not a creditcard),
and i'm heading of to Uganda and Rwanda within a month.
I've read a lot about this, but the info is either unclear, and/or very dated.

Does anyone have any recent information on the use of a Mastercard-debitcard in Rwanda and Uganda?

Thanks!

I used a Mastercard debit card (US bank) no problem in Rwanda in May 07, and in Uganda in June 09.

Thanks.
I would mainly use my debit-card at ATM's to withdraw money from my account.

Are there any ATM's where i can use my MasterCard (Maestro) in Uganda and Rwanda?

2

That I don't know. I used it mainly to pay hotels.

I was told I could use the ATM at Barclays in Kampala last May. In practice it didn't work had to go in and get my Shillings over the counter witgh my passport, a right pain. I used to have a Visa card and had no probs with that.

You can use your Mastercard Debit Card at Stanbic Bank ATM's throughout Uganda.

Stanbic bank, as #5 said, was the only bank that i found in Kampala that accepted MC in the ATMs. Barclays and the others are only Visa.

6

As of last week, my brother and a friend were unable to use their mastercard at ANY bank in Kampala - Stanbic included. Visa is a much safer option.

7

Not sure about MC, but my Visa debit card worked throughout Uganda.

There's not supposed to be a single working ATM in all of Rwanda, and I certainly didn't see one myself, so plan on having cash for that portion of your trip.

Hi, i just got back from my trip to Uganda and Rwanda.
To answer my own question:

I could use my MasterCard-debitcard at any Stanbic ATM (Stanbic 'Autobank'), and there are quite a lot of them around Uganda, in all midsize and larger cities.
In Rwanda i couldn't use my MasterCard, but you can use your VISA-debitcard there at several ATM's if you have one. I just changed my euro's, although at some places you could also pay in dollars or euro's.

I am currently in Kampala Uganda and having tried to use my Mastercard in Stanbic the ATM firstly refused my pin number then after finally accepting it stated that my bank was unavailable. I would suggest that you use Visa as it is the best alternative and as Mastercard are being phased out I'd think it best to have a Visa card. I am referring to a Mastercard Credit Card as I don't know anyone who has a Mastercard Debit Card, my normal Debit Card is not allowed to be used in African Countries according to my bank, which helps me nothing at all. I knew not to bring travellers cheques as they are very difficult to change so I'mm afraid your best bet is hard cash either Dollars/ Pounds or Euro's for the best rates of exchange.

It's been a while now but I was in Uganda and Rwanda Dec 11/Jan 12 with only a mastercard for cash. In Rwanda I had to present my passport and credit card (travelex cards don't work as they don't have your name) to the Bank of Kigali. In Uganda I had no trouble at all with either my (Australian) credit card or my travelex card at any Stanbic ATM.
