Best Day Trips from Addis Ababa

Country forums / Africa / Ethiopia

Hello~

I'll be in Addis Ababa for about a week, but will have some free time here and there. Sadly, not nearly enough time to really go explore Ethiopia properly. (I'll come back and spend a month next year).

I'm looking for suggestions for day trips. Be it walking, bus, hire a car, hitchhike, bike. Any suggestions are much appreciated.

Cheers

Hi A good quick day trip would be to the Volcanic lakes down at Debre Zeit. Takes a couple of hours by 4wd or a bit longer by local bus ( obviously much cheaper) but great views, bird watching and good little restaurants and places to eat on the edge of the lakes. Also quite possible to stay overnight and come back the next day so you are not rushed.
Also a drive up Entoto mountain on the ouskirts of Addis is also worth a visit perhaps on another day. Great vies of the city and a museum, church and an old palace up the top to explore.
there is alos lots to do in the city so you certainly wont be wondering what to do!
Have fun

I agree with Champas. Debre Zeyit is a good day trip. Minibus is the way to go. Minibuses leave from the bus station near Mexico Square, not the main bus station.

Another option is horseback riding. An outfit called Equus Ethiopia can arrange everything for a fun day trip on the plains just west of Addis.

Have fun,

Any chance of getting to Laibela and back to Addis in say 2.5days? My flight will leave late at night it seems

Hi Kira. If you fly both ways this is possible.
