Hey, does anyone know if it is still only possible to get the Archaeological permits in Khartoum or Atbarar? Or is it even necessary, or is it more kinda like the photo permit? (from what I’ve gathered that is not really necessary, right?). We are planning on coming overland from Egypt, so if we need it, it will be kinda inconvenient to have to go to either Khartoum or Atbarar first.
Thanks in advance, Martin and Laerke

You will be met in the immigration area in Wadi Halfa where you can get the permits to all the places.

They were US$10 as of January 2006 when I went through, as stated in the guide.

For the archeological permits, it was (when I was in Sudan, last november) impossible to have them in Khartoum. I was as individual.
You must go to Méroé (in the little office in the entrance) to get the permits for Méroé, Naqa and Mussawarat es Sufra
And going to Karima to bought all the permits for the "north" included Old Dongola, Jebel Barkal (+ Nuri, El Kuru and Ghazali) and all sites from Dongola to Abri (like Soleb or even the Defufa in Kerma)
The price is 10 USD each.
The photo permit is free. Take it because in Méroé, I meet a security guard who want see it!
I didn't go in Haalfa. I can't say nothing about this city.
