If you want to see the amazing world of South Ehiopia you should/must be supported by experienced people who will help you to get to the most interesting places, to explain you what is what and give you a little bit comfort and safety during your travel.
In my opinion the best way to get such amazing experience is to hire a car with an English speaking driver/guide.
We - my brother and myself did it in March 2009. We spent in so called “South Circle” 10 days visiting several tribes. Besides unusual Africa’s experience we had, we really enjoyed the company of our driver who became our friend just after the first day of the journey. Thanks to him we got very deep understanding of the Ethiopia reality and we had a lot of fun.
To be honest; in Addis Ababa there are many travel agencies and it seems to be like lottery – not all travelers are happy with their choices after their trip, sometimes you can be a victim of scams.
We took Abeba Tours Ethiopia agency [www.abebatoursethiopia.com] run by an American girl Tania and her Ethiopian husband Cheru. They are very enthusiastic people who have been running their travel agency with real passion. After getting to Addis we were invited by them for a wonderful diner at traditional restaurant and after the trip we enjoyed lunch at Tania and Cheru house making summary of our trip.
My advice for you is simple; if you are planning to visit Ethiopia write an email to Tania with all kind of questions/doubts you have. For sure you will be sent with full answers. Even if you finally decide to take another agency many information from Tania will be very useful for you. As I mentioned above Tania is an American girl living in Ethiopia for several years and therefore it is easy for her to understand your expectations and combine them with Africa reality.
