Hi Everyone

My boyfriend and I are visiting Rwanda in September and have been in touch with Egide and Greg at Amahoro tours who have sorted out our visas to see the gorillas. They have asked that we pay them 50% upfront and 50% when we arrive.

Just wanted to get some feedback from anyone who has used them before - is it ok to wire them the money in advance? Did everything turn out ok?

I know I must sound distrusting but I have been scammed in the past and it is a lot of money to send without knowing the person at the other end.

Please let me know what your experience with Amahoro tours has been and if you think its ok to wire 50% of the cost to them before we get there

Thanks

Caroline x

I used Amahoro Tours last year when I visited Rwanda and yes they are a reputable firm . I wired 50% of my tour cost from the US and when I arrived at their offices I paid the balance with no problems!

This recommendation is long overdue. I spent seven weeks in Rwanda this spring (May – June 2010) and had the lucky opportunity to do some sightseeing. I would highly recommend Amahoro Tours for gorilla trekking and any other kind of excursion you may be considering in Rwanda. I personally used Amahoro for gorilla trekking when I was in Musanze (Rhuengie). I also did the Golden Monkey Trek with them, as well as a genocide tour out of Kigali. The owner, Greg, is very professional and happily answered every single question I had either by e-mail or by phone. He never grew tired of answering all of my questions (and I had a lot!). Regarding the gorilla trekking, Amahoro tours helped obtain the permit for me and then provided reliable transportation. And, I really appreciated the follow up the night prior to my gorilla trekking about what time I should be ready and who my driver would be. Amahoro’s guides/drivers were very courteous, friendly and safe (I had Abby and Mike). I would use this outfitter again. You are in good and trusting hands with Amahoro Tours and everyone speaks really good English.

Thanks, Birgit
Ps...I wired money to them several times and it was all okay. Hope this helps.

Another post for a positive feedback.
I wired money to them 2 months ago and everything was in order when I went to pick up the permit.
Greg is very helpful and provides fast answers to your e-mails.

The trickiest part is just to find them when in Ruhengeri, don't trust the LP map ;-)

Thanks for the info about Amahoro Tours. I think my friends and I will use them for our trip to Rwanda in March. Yeah!

Just came back from Rwanda and used Amahoro both for gorilla tracking in Volcanos National Park and for a visit to Akagera National Park. They are honest, reliable and professional.

I just got back from Rwanda last week, after using Amahoro Tours & Primate Safaris.

They failed to make hotel bookings, booked permitts on the wrong day (we had to change flights at our expense to fix their mistake) and the guide/'driver" we had for 7 days was really just a driver who knew nothing about the places we went to.

The final insult was the places we eventually found accomadition available on short notice (as they did not make the booking) were much cheaper than what we had paid for - they did not give us the difference back (about USD$460 for the group).

Learn from our mistake,... use another operator. Amahoro are a poor choice.

Booking a normal tourist / run of the mill 3 day gorilla trekking "tour" ok, anything beyond the basics, go with anyone other then Amahoro Tours!

Primate Safaris were professional beyond belief. What a great experience in a beautiful country... wishing i could go back tmrw!

Ben/Australia, I am shocked by your anger at Amahoro Tours. Maybe you got the wrong name of the tour company?
