accra to lome by car

Country forums / Africa / Ghana

Hi All,
Has anyone done this trip before? What paperwork to you need to cross the border with a car and do you think it will just be easier using public transport?

Thanks

I did this trip about 10 years ago now. It's very easy, you need to get your brown ECOWAS insurance certificate ( a bit like getting a green card for travelling in Europe) from your insurer in Ghana and then pay local 3rd party insurance at the border. I crossed at the Ho-Kpalime border but back at Lome-Aflao.

The documents are the following - International driving licence, Ecowas Insurance (brown book) done by your local insurance company in Ghana, Internatinal certificate of roadwothiness (green book), done by police just behind Maxmart. Than when you come to Aflao they will issue vignette touristique (laissez-passer) - which cost 10 000CFA.
The brown card is valid for 3 months and cost around 60 ghC, the green card is for one year, but forgot the cost.
Of course you will need a visa for Togo and multiple visa for Ghana (or resident permit) to be able to get back. Togolese visa is possible to do on the border for 10 000CFA.
When you reach the border you will meet many beach boys - contractors who will be trying to help you to process your car through the border. This service is useless because it is quite simple to do it on your own.
Bon voyage!!!
