Hi all, my girlfriend and I will be in Zanzibar just after NY's and I'm trying to get a little more info on accommodation.Specifically Pongwe, Kiwengawa or Kendwa as I've read those are beautiful and a little more quiet.

I'm looking for something basic but am unsure whether that is realistic - everything online is pricey.

I would prefer to arrive and look when I'm on the beach to try find a little hut ... would that be possible and does that exist in Zanzibar?

Thanks so much,
Jeremy

I'm in Pongwe right now. I just turned up and found a place called 'bush baby bungalows'. Only four little Bandas in a private garden at the end of the beach. I'm paying 50,000tsh ($22) approx for the two of us in a Banda with breakfast included. I'm so glad I've found this place, Pongwe is great. Like you I couldn't find anything online, there's only half a dozen places to stay here, the next cheapest being $50. Obviously this place doesn't have a website or anything so you can just rock up. I very much doubt it's ever full, at the moment we're the only people there, I fact I've only seen a few other people in Pongwe in the last four days!

Thanks so much for the info, it's so good to hear there are these places ... this is exactly what we're looking for! Hope you're having an awesome time on the beaches,

I stayed at Nungwi backpackers (quite close to Kendwa) - very cheap, literally on the beach and an absolutely stunning area.

Rooms were super super basic, but I had hot water and a decent breakfast.
