We are two families with kids of 7-8 spending 12 days on Zanzibar next summer. Where would you advise us to stay ? I got one spot not to far from ST (Mbweni ruins), another one in Hungwi, a third one in Matemwe, ... all advises are wellcome, in the middle range of accomodations.

key is beach, not hotel. dont get fooled by nice hotel pictures.
You need North Coast (Nungwi) or East Coast (Paje etc)

Mbweni ruins is beautiful if you want to be near town but still with a bit of a tropical resort feeling, but I wouldn't call it mid-range, I think rooms are $180 per double.
Nungwi or Kendwa are good beaches for swimming and other water sports, as well as some "night life". It's quite busy and I've been noticing more and more families with children there as well, so your children may even find some company there. Matemwe is very quiet - beautiful for a honeymoon, but I'm not sure how much the children will enjoy it there. But then again, I don't know them, of course.
