Hi, I was in Zanzibar for some much-needed R&R from Sudan back in April, just pushing it a bit with regards to the start of the rainy season.
Just a couple of things, I flew through Nairobi on Precision Air, it was about an hour-long flight, and quite a nice airline, FYI. If you can get a direct flight into Dar from the U.S. then you should be able to find any number of hops to Zanzibar 7 days a week. My RT flight from Nairobi was about $400, but (see below) I sort of booked last-minute.
I went to Zanzibar to merely sit on the beach all day and stare at the Ocean, so other than a lovely day spent walking around in Stone Town, with great restaurants, shops, and interesting architecture, I didn't do much but chill out on the beach. But there are activities galore for more active visitors, from hiking to diving to sailing, etc. etc. and any hotel/resort should be able to provide many recommendations.
I stayed at the small (13 suites total!) Mbweni Ruins Resort, about a 15 minute drive south of Stone Town. Very nice, about $130 a night (I made my reservations last minute for a holiday weekend, hence the higher rate) with 2 meals a day inclusive. The food was beyond fantastic, not only at the resort but everywhere - Swahili cooking is delicious, very fresh and light, lots of seafood, and of course the amazing combination of spices, which make everything flavorful as opposed to fiery hot.
I am looking forward to returning and spending a bit more time out and about on the island in the near future, but for a quick 4-day R&R respite, I really loved it.
FYI entry visa is $50 at the airport.
