Glad your still in one piece Kaz, look forward to hearing all about your adventures................and information for me!
Arjwilson, I've sent Alcotteer a PM with details of the transport we used, I'll forward it on to you.
There is less transport along the route from Songea to the coast than in other parts I visited, but it's well worth the effort.
The scenery, especially between Songea and Tunduru where you are travelling through thick bush with very little in the way of human habitation, is pretty and there's a chance of seeing lion. The turning boy in the vehicle I travelled with told me they once saw 5 lion in the road and had to wait an hour for them to move away before they could continue.
Transport on this part is by bus or landrover, both leaving very early morning and needs booking the day before. It's probably worth booking from Tunduru to Masasi too, to get a good seat, but not necessary if you aren't fussed. Most buses leave Tunduru at 6am (there is also supposed to be one at 8am, but it didn't leave until nearly 10am on the day we travelled.)
The road from Nantumbo to Nangomba is dirt and rock, so best travelled when it is dry, but it's good tarmac from there. I'm not sure it would be easy to move on from Nantumbo without returning to Songea first, as any public transport coming through will most likely be full - Nantumbo is only 70km from Songea on brand new tarmac, so it wouldn't be too much of an inconvenience to be a bit sqashed for that short while!
More than happy to provide any further info if you have more questions.
