We (couple on low-budget, 30) are thinking about travelling to Tanzania and Kenya this August. I already tried to find an answer to these questions- but was unfortunately unable to do so.
- Is it better/cheaper/safer to book a safari in Serengeti / Ngorongoro Crater / Lake Manyara National Park in advance or will we be able to sort it out in Arusha? I have read that agencies offer to join groups there, is it feasible to organise this in one or two days? Also, would you recommend Amboseli National Park over Serengeti or visiting both?
- Also, we very much like hiking/mountaineering. Any recommendations aside from Mt. Meru (Kili is out of question)?
Thanks for your help!

Hi
It will be good if you arrange it before, but if you think you will have 3-4 days looking for tour operator it might work but guess what been in Tanzania for arrangement will be double hectic

Booking in advance you have a good chance to negotiate with a Tour Operator, I did the same and it was fantastic. Booking in advances assures you of the best guide and nice vehicle too.
There are factors that may lead one to pre book. If you have definite date and tour you want to do with a group then it can be difficult to just go and get the tour ready especially when you are doing lodges. July/August is a very busy month for lodges. Otherwise if you just want normal camping safari then you can just go to Nairobi and find one operator from there Right Time Safaris are more popular with daily departures in Kenya and Tanzania. Group tours are cheaper and enjoyable as you change views with fellow travellers. Enjoy scenaries in this beautiful part of the world.

LiaSp!
We are planning to do the same around 9th August. When are you going there! We might join you.

Hi there,
From everything that I have heard it is best to organise/pre-book in advance. That way you have the opportunity to understand what is included in the package rather than the tour guide trying to "sell" it to you at that point in time.
I have a safari temporarily booked for the last week in August. Obviously safaris are cheaper with the more people going. If you are interested in joining my reservations, you are more than welcome. Please let me know if so and I can pass on the details.
Thanks and good luck!!
