We're hiking Mt Meru in the next few days and getting lots of conflicting information. We were under impression that we could do a self organized hike where we get ourselves there (we have a car) and then just hire the compulsory ranger (to ward off any dangerous wildlife) at the gate. Multiple websites and reviews have suggested that this is possible. However, we just phoned the hotline to ask about another question, and they said that the only way to do the hike is through a pre-organized tour group. We really want to do the climb at our own pace, own food, own everything -- and struggling with the mismatched information. Has anyone done the hike recently who can clear this up? Thanks so much!!!

Before was possible to drive to the gate, pay the Ranger fees, and entrance for your car and yourselves. We came from there just last week, nowadays it is impossible to arrange a private hike. Only licensed operators are allowed to pay the hike permit and not with cash, only TANAPA pre- paid cards from Tour operators were allowed at the gate to enter Arusha park. We were 5 and went to the gate with our cash, but we were told by park officials to go back to Arusha and take a permit from an operator, we did that. They don;t allow you to go without porters and food. If you go to the market in Arusha to buy food, buy the permit from an operator, employ porters by yourself, we came to discover that going a private hike was more expensive than an organized hike, and the fees for a Tanzania non registered car was more expensive than hiring a car from an operator and leave your car at the tour operators office or car. More information you can pm me

Thank you so much Nuriay! That information is incredibly helpful. We've managed to organize a tour last minute. Gosh, Tanzania really makes it difficult to do any (reasonably priced) hiking. We are taking 2 guides and 1 porter (for the guides belongings) -- for a party of three. It really is quite ridiculous. I definitely know I will be hiking elsewhere in future, they seem to be turning mountains into a money making racket in this part of the world! Quite a tragedy really!
