Hi All,
I am planning to travel to Tanzania this Dec and want to do a hike up Mt Meru and combine it with a Safari of some kind. My question is, I will be by myself and wondering if it would be cheaper to just book something when I show up. I know that Meru isn't as popular as Kili so would I have to wait days possibly for a trip to leave for Meru? I would like to join another group (to make it cheaper and to have some other people around)what would be the best way to do this. Is it possible to do this when I show up or should I just organize something before hand? Thanks

I did Meru solo in 2002 without setting anything up in advance. Just walk around Arusha for a few hours and touts will approach you. I went with Silver Spear and they were great and set everything up except the guide who is assigned to you by the park. Overall, I liked Meru better than Kili - way less crowded, nice bunkhouses, more scenic, more personal interaction with porter and guide, good game viewing down low.
I didn't do a safari in Tanzania but I think the same applies as far as people approaching you in the street. However, I think it is much more cost effective to go with a group which shouldn't be a problem as there will be lots of other tourists in Arusha.

I would choose the company before and ask them whether or not they have a group leaving for Meru in the period you're going. if you don't want to go solo, you'll need to be flexible and adapt to the departing dates they give you. shop around and choose a company that gives you more chances of going with other people. make them understand that you're ready to book with them if they find a group for you. But make sure, should you choose one, to have them write on the receipt that you're supposed to leave with a group. that will help when you get to speak to them in person.
you can just show up and book, but you might need to be really flexible with the departing dates, then.
Anyway, good luck. Meru is a phenomenal hike and you'll love it. some prefer it to kili.
