I am going to Tanzania in a couple of weeks and the plan was to spend a couple of days in Stone Town, then by the beach north of Zanzibar city and finally 6 days in Matemwe to scuba dive. But then I found Mafia Island and the chance to dive with whale sharks. (A combination is possible if I fly from Zanzibar and skip Matemwe but it will be expensive.)
So the question is: Mafia Island or Zanzibar?
After that I head in to the mainland for safari and then head to Ethiopia.

I would also completely recommend Mafia Island, it is brilliant! However, if you are looking for certain things (like partying or lots of tourist attractions) then Zanzibar might be right for you.
