I plan to take the rongai route up kilimangaro, would a pair of light waterproof non insulated hiking boots be ok. I plan to go in february.

I don't know what you mean for "light", but take in consideration that it will get really cold on the night/day of the summit, and the last thing you want is to quit your climb because of hypothermia. I was wearing 2 pairs of wool hiking socks and waterproof standard hiking boots and needed to constantly move my feet in order to keep them sufficiently warm.

I used a pair of Raichle Kootenay boots, they were insulated and with two pairs of ski socks on and my feet were still cold, it's been about two weeks since reaching the top of Kili and my feet still feel numb and frost bitten.

Would I consider your light waterproof non insulated hiking boots to be enough? Definitely not!

WowieBowie has a good point, here. I hope your feet are doing better. Sorry about that.
Stay warm, kipper63. It might be a pain in the behind to carry heavy hiking boots, but you don't want to quit just because you're cold. that would be really frustrating.

Hi Kipper63,

We did Rongai a few weeks ago and I wore Meindl Magic boots which I guess would be classed a light weight boot although they are goretex lined.

I think the trick is in the socks. For the summit night I wore Bridgedale thermal liners and smartwool hikers and my feet were fine. Make sure you take good gaiters as well.

Allan.

I climbed Rongai in September and used Scarpa Mustangs, they were great!
