I stayed at the Greenlight (on Kira's recommendation)and used the hotel car to get to Ubungo, it cost 20,000Tsh (in 2015).
The hotel is good, with helpful and friendly staff, and Tabata has a nice villagy feel - no worries about wandering around in the evenings and I'd happily stay again.
Same price as Kiota, and a fair bit closer to Ubungo - although Kiota looks like it has a pool, which would be lovely if you'll have time to enjoy it.

Tabata's Greenlight location is almost halfway to Ubungo I don't know why you are recommending it, I mean just why not recommend Ubungo Terminal hotel a full way one!!
Mauya Executive Lodge is just behind Airport runway abt 2.5km,while Tabata is down abt 7km

As the OP asked for somewhere not too far away, Tabata isn't too bad to get to if you go the back way over the river bed heading north out of the airport first.

Getting all the way to Ubungo has bad traffic, as does the junction towards Mauya Executive Lodge when you come out of the airport, as you know that's the main thoroughfare from town!

Thanks everyone for the help.

One other thing - the first time I arrive in Dar Es Salaam at the airport, it will be 4am arriving at terminal 3 and I'm catching another flight out at 10.30am at terminal 2. Is there any place in the airport to stay for a few hours, or should I book another night at a hotel close by? For a few hours at that time of night I'd prefer to hang around the airport, but I've heard that it isn't so easy to wait there.

You are welcome:)
There is a fast food called "Tasty " near airport parking operating 24/7,you can buy some food and they will allow you,to use WiFi for free and stay there, kill some few hours!
But if you still think you need a hotel nearby to refresh you can try with Mauya Executive lodge a budget airport transit lodge!
Cheers
