I realise that it's illegal and not recommended to take a dhow from Dar to Zanzibar, but what are the legalities and practicalities of taking a cruise on a dhow once on Zanzibar itself? Does anybody know if there are there operators who take short trips without going far from shore? Any feedback would be much appreciated. Thanks,
Braydon

BTW. Does anyone know how they managed to get permission to take dhows from Dar to Zanzibar on The Amazing Race? Was it because the boats were motored, or just because the TV execs offered someone in the right place a lot of money?

There are plenty of operators that will take you on sunset cruises on dhows, or converted dhows (equipped with motor). One Ocean dive shop do in Stonetown, and in Kendwa and Nungwi there are also a couple of people that I know of.

Absolutely, taking a dhow ON Zanzibar is a non-issue and you can easily arrange sth as explained above. Just to correct, it's not illegal to take a dhow between the mainland and the island or vis versa. You just need to sign that the trip is at your own risk and port authorities let you go. just don't make the mistake and take a dhow to tanga or mombasa (hard to find anyway), bagamoyo is 4-5 hours and absolutely sufficient for a good experience. price tag is ~15 Tan Schilling.

Dhow trips are common on Zanzibar – don't worry! Personally if I was booking a dhow trip I'd wait until the evening and take a sunset cruise – these really are special!
