Hi !
Im solo traveller in Tanzania My plan s to visit Dar, Arusha or Moshi or other places inland, Zanzibar and Pemba.I would like to visit local communities and villages and participate in their daily life...but i have some questions:
how safe is it travelling the inland by buss for a single male traveller?
how much does a 4 days cultural trip (no safaries or kilimanzaro) costs and where are the most interesting places to visit in term of cultural experience?
i d like also to see pemba island but i couldnt find any budget accomodation close to the sea , are there any homestays and how can i reach the island directly by ferry from dar or tanga?
tangas coast worth a visit?
could anyone suggest me a nice, not overcrowded, beach in zanzibar island with beach huts or simple homestay? any other suggestions about places or activities welcome....
thanx in advance

Hi Simos,
I just returned from a 16 day solo trip to Tanzania and Zanzibar. Best trip of my life. I stayed at the Greenhouse in Arusha. Guaranteed cultural experience here! The host Abuyo, is a Maasai. If you ask, he can arrange to take you to his village (and he gets to see his family, too). I loved the Greenhouse, but Arusha is a dusty city. Moshi looked cleaner. I then travelled by bus (it's long and uncomfortable- but totally safe as a female solo traveller) to Lushoto. Lushoto was amazing- happy farming villages, rainforests, viewpoints. I'd love to return and volunteer there. I hired a guide- Bakari. Great place to learn the culture. Then I took a bus to Dar, and headed straight for Zanzibar. Dar is way too big and crazy for me. I heard that the coast is less crowded, more affordable, and just as beautiful as Zanzibar. I would check it out. You can ferry to Pemba and Zanzibar from Tanga, but its only 2 days a week, and not as reliable as from Dar. I stayed in Jambiani in Zanzibar. I loved it, made many local friends. I stayed at Uhuru Guest House- $20/ night included breakfast for a bungalow on the beach. I can recommend a house that's nicer, on the beach, and I heard $15 a night. Let me know your interest, and I'll connect you with Mussa- he is a shopkeeper, farmer, postman, and manages the house. His son is a taxi driver, fisherman, farmer, and can arrange trips, rent bicycles, etc. for tourists. His goal is to save $ and be Jambiani's first medical doctor. They are great honest people. I loved it there and can't wait to return. I have friends that stayed in Matembwe, and they liked that, too. Not touristy, close to diving for Mnemba and Pemba, affordable bungalows.
