We were all set to go to Tanzania and Zanzibar in January of this year but had to cancel at last moment for family reasons. Last year, while doing research, I came across a cottage to be rented by a French person (I think) called ndimu. It looks very nice on the website. Has anyone stayed there, or visited the fishing village of Jambiani? I hope you don't mind 'ndimu', but the best recommendation is personal opinions from other travellers. We are planning to go in January 2008, and I am trying to decide whether to stay in a budget hotel or rent a cottage, and yours certainly looks nice. How easy is it to go snorkelling, swimming etc nearby. DOes anyone know?

Hi, all of the east coast is absolute paradise but not possible to snorkel or swim easily due to tidal & seaweed. You could do boat trips though to snorkling spots. North & west is best for snorkling.

Hi,
I know ndimu's house in Jambiani - it's a nice place. I used to live nextdoor and some friends of mine stayed there.
Jambiani is a more quiet place than the north - and thats good. you still find enough restaurants and good food, but no partyscene.
snorkeling and swimming is possible only during high tide - but during low tide it's really nice to take long walks on the beach.
for me, Jambiani is the best place to stay on zbar....
cheers

I just got back yesterday from Zanzibar and spent several days in Jambiani.

I am not familiar with this person's place although we did see a number of private places for rent. Jambiani is indeed quiet. Perfectly quiet which we loved. We snorkeled out near the reef - it wasn't great snorkelling compared to other places but it was still enjoyable. However, if you want to be able to swim all the time, you'll not want to go to Jambiani as the tides get very low there. However, we loved it as it was quite stunning when the tides were out and it was interesting to watch the women working at their seaweed 'farms'.

Jambiani itself is quite long - we were told it is about 7km long and contains 14 small villages.

We really loved it there - much more than Bwejuu (and Paje) just up the coast. Feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions.
