I know it's a very generalized question but having looked at some web sites for preliminary ideas about a safari in Tanzania, we are staggered at the delusional prices some organisations are asking.
We are interested in seeing wildlife and landscape of course but we do not need to be waited on like a pseudo royal family while doing that. Camping would be fine as would basic hostel/lodges. We accept that we need to pay the National Park / Jeep / guide fees etc but we are hoping to find a sensible company recommended by other Thorn-Tree'ers which might charge affordable fees.
Any suggestion?
Thanks
Greg

Try another country ;-)
South Africa, for example..you can do self-drive safari, and stay in reasonably priced campsites within NPs (like Kruger for example).
Tanzania safari is not a budget experience.....

I suppose you've done Kenya? How about TZ but using a Kenyan Tour Op? See if they can do a better package deal. Of course entry fees into NPs, esp. Ngorongoro, are expensive as they are trying to protect their natural resources but you can usually find a better deal when you're on the ground if you don't mind winging it.

Try to contact Happy World Safaris, a local Tour Operator in Tanzania they do organize budgeted safaris with great services. We used them on our 5 days safari and they truly spoiled us. Everything was top notch and I would not hesitate recommending them to any traveler

Don't worry about the royal treatment- that ends when you have paid.
Try Kenya. Self-drive, hire a guide by the day if you need it (and unless you like getting lost, you will need it in Mara).

i was in similar situation a few weeks tryng to find a resonably priced safari for this coming July. there are too many to choose from and I kept coming across many 'fake reviews' for different companies. in the end we booked with Basecamp, they have been very helpful and informative and reasonably priced and have good reviews on many of the different forums i researched on. We have been in regular email contact and paid our deposit. so far so good with them.
