We are planning on spending 3-4 nights in Arusha before our (budget camping) Safari on 3rd August. Have been trying to find some budget accommodation & the cheapest we've been quoted so far is $60 per night for a double at The Outpost. We were hoping to get cheaper than this. Not looking for anything fancy, just clean & basic. Is this as cheap as it gets or will we be able to find something cheaper on arrival? Thanks.

The Centre House Hostel near the clock tower has basic doubles for about Tsh 15000. There is also a number of guesthouses close to the bus station which should be about the same price.
A while I ago we paid $25 for a double at the Naaz Hotel, will be a bit more now, I guess, but still less than $60.

I forget the name of the hotel, but I stayed in a double for 6,000 shillings. It was just a block away from Pizzarusha, a great pizza place. I know the restaurant is in the guidebooks, as are the hotels. They are far from high class, but if you want budget they've got it! There's plenty of accommodation in the city for less than $60, so keep looking.

Supporting No.3, you can find some cheap accommodation at this closer to Pizzaarusha, i think she was trying to mention Mashele Guest House, Kitundu Guest house etc but now adays are becames high more than Tsh6,000 in a double room, is about 10-15$ per night.
Also, my ideal agreed with No. 1 stefo, he have a good idea with the accomodation if you want to stay safe, find that place near the clock tower.
Always when your travelling anywhere try to avoid any cheapest things, because "Cheap is expensive" can cost you more!! Be a mid-range traveller not cheapest, not too expensive.
Wish you the best stay.

I paid $25 for a single in the Naaz last Sep. It was convenient for taking the 6:00am airline shuttle bus to KIA, which left from 1 1/2 blocks away.

I also stayed in the Arusha Backpackers mentioned above. The single was $4 at the time, but seems to have gone up. It is quite basic (e.g. ceiling fan & you can hear other rooms) but it is clean. The rooftop cafe is worth a visit even if you don't stay in the hotel. It has a good view of Mt Meru and the chaos in the streets.
