I'm considering a 2-3 week trip to Zanzibar, probably early next year. So i'm kinda looking around for some pointers/tips.

I'm used to travelling on a shoestring, and like to improvise as I go. For the moment though, money is not really a very big issue, but I still would like to keep my options open as much as I can once I get there.

But since I don't know anything about how the island works, would I have to book a hotel/lodge/'resort' in advance or could I just arrive on the island and start looking for a place I like the best - even in the, say, $100+ price bracket? Or would that really be a major hassle? Maybe book in advance for the first several days?

Is it possible to stay on the island on a budget as well?

And how is transport between east and west Zanzibar island and between the several beach area?

Thanks!!

Hello,

how are you doing? I hope you are doing well. I am Gasto from Tanzania.

There are a lot of places in Zanzibar where you can get nice accommodation.

I will search for different options and will inform you accordingly.

You can contact me through gastolekule@gmail.com for simplicity as I do not sign in this website frequently.

Enjoy your time and Karibu Tanzania.

If "early next year" means anything after mid-January, you should have no problems booking accomodation on the spot, both budget and more expensive categories. Budget on Zanzibar means at least $10 per person in a guesthouse in town and about $20 on the beaches (single occupancy). Double bungalows at the beaches start at about $30.
Most public transport goes to and from Stonetown, so if you wanted to travel from the north (e.g.Nungwi) to the south east by dala dala you would have to go via town. But it's very possible, and dala dalas go pretty much everywhere.
For transport to the beaches you could also go by shared minibus, a bit more expensive, but very convenient with pick-ups and dropp offs at your accommodation.
