Ahoy

My wife and I are wanting to visit Zanzibar for a week, what we would like to know is when is the best time to visit to avoid the main tourist season as well as the monsoon. We have been told that towards the end of January is good... Is that true? Also is malaria a problem there?

Cheers

I found mid-january to be wonderful. The whole christmas and new years crowds were gone and it is in between the short and long rains. You should also be able to negotiate prices for your rooms then. I was there in Jan 05 and the nungwi beach area was very slow with few people and plenty of great rooms available without the groups of drunk people every night. You should take malaria meds.

January / February is very hot, but if you don't mind that it's a good time. I also like September / October.

Oh, and yes, Malaria is a problem in Zanzibar, so prophylaxis is recommended.
