Hello,

I am a Tanzanian Backpacker and I am planning to visit Katavi National Park next week. I shall be in Mbeya and planning to head northwards to Sumbawanga and then to the park.

Any ideas on how best to go about?

Is there any other gate to the park apart from Sitalike?

Can I rent a self drive vehicle from Sumbawanga or anywhere close to the park or game drives?

Thank you!

Self drive is not advisable you might get lost ,stranded, car breakdown, all in all you don't want to be in middle of park all alone with wild animals!!
Am not Sure if you can hire 4*4 car in Sumbawanga but you can try!!but having a guide in the Park is always advisable if not mandatory!

Would it be possible to hire a guide to join a self-drive vehicle?

In terms of getting stranded this is presumably no worse with a reliable self-drive vehicle than a vehicle from a tour company.

Yes it would be usually guides are obtained through local tour agents ,just contact them in advance!
