Hello,
Africa newbie here...
My girldfriend and I will go to South Africa for the first time in October. We're flying into Jo'Burg and out of Cape Town four weeks later. We're planning to rent a car.
Two questions:
- Which rental company do you recommend or adivise to avoid?
- Do you need a car for getting around in Cape Town or is public transport good enough? (Thinking about returning the car a few days earlier.)
Thanks :-)
Hi all,
Since this is a question I typically ask on these forums, here are my 0.02 for places I have stayed in and recommend (or not as the case may be). Current as of Aug, 2016
JOHANNESBURG
Curiocity Backpackers located in the artsy, edgy Maboneng precinct. The hostel is in an area that is rapidly undergoing a change from seedy inner city to a hip place with arts, restaurants, cafes and music venues. The attentive owner and his staff keep it sparklingly clean and comfortable, offer tours around…
Hi,
I've read some of the previous posts on here about Kruger trips. I've narrowed it down to a few options, and wanted to get some advise/opinions...
Some background - I'm a single traveler, arriving into Johannesburg on the morning of September 7. I have to be back in Johannesburg by the evening of September 11, so I have about 5 days in the best case scenario. I've read about the self driving option, but considering I am traveling solo, am not really interested in spending that much time…
We are tossing up between Hilltop Camp and Mpila in the Hluhluwe area and would appreciate any recommendations about the best place to stay.
We don't need anything fancy. Simple with no frills is fine. Prefer to be in a place where there is a fun, casual atmosphere, possibility of seeing plenty of animals, game drives and peaceful surroundings (no tour buses or large crowds). We'll be there the first week of September for 3 nights.
Your thoughts please?
We are planning on spending about 10 weeks in southern Africa this year and are keen to have a car so we can drive through S. Africa to Namibia, Botswana and possibly Zimbabwe.
Does anyone have recommendations for a company that will rent us a vehicle for that time which is reasonably priced and reliable? It has been suggested we might buy a cheap car and then sell it back to the vendor at the end of our time there so we're also open to ideas.
Thank you.
My husband and I will be in South Africa in September and, since we have lots of time on our hands, are considering driving from Durban to Cape Town and the Garden Route.
I'd love to hear from anyone who's done this as to how long it takes to drive and some nice places to stop along the way (for overnights as well as short visits).
Thanks
I bought a spur of the moment trip to South Africa and don't feel super prepared. I know there is so much to do, so I'm not worried about that or figuring out certain things as I go. But anybody looking for a travel buddy at any point from August 3-25? I'm not planning to rent a car but would chip in if anyone wants to split one. I just have a ticket into Cape Town and out of Joburg. Any tips or ideas for what to do in three weeks are also very much appreciated.
I am travelling to Cape Town on my way to other places in Africa. I will be in CT for 5 nights. I have accommodation at Camps Bay (at the moment), but I would like to know if it is better to stay in town. Whilst Camps Bay and the beach look good, the reports of the journey from Camps Bay to town vary between 10 minutes and 20 minutes by cab. I always make the most of my time when I travel....so suggestions regarding the best location to stay will be gratefully accepted.
Also, (with all due to…
My wife and I are planning a trip to South Africa and were working with these two outfitters mostly. Just wondering if I could borrow your collective wisdom if anyone has had an experience with either? It's a big trip for us so just want to be sure :) Thanks for any help you can offer!
Hello everyone.
I am planning on making a trip coming September (7th) till November (8th). Will be doing this alone, but hope to meet some people along the road and share some miles/costs (will be staying in Bacpackers).
Why I am posting here is to check if you think it's possible what I'd want to do and if you have some tips on where to go, etc.
I am flying into Cape Town and then driving to Windhoek in 3 days.
From there I have an organized camping trip from Windhoek to Botswana and back to…
