Hi,
I am planning to go somewhere to subsharian africa from sept onwards for three months, so costs for accomodation etc will be crucial to decide where to go. The lonely planet south africa website gives 40-150 Rand as average low budget accomodation. remembering my former travels, I sometimes found their indications quite right and sometimes completely wrong. Could anyone gove me an indication of how much to pay for an average low-budget dorm?
Thankks so much!!!

Room/Camping rates in South African Backpacker hostels
Camping - mostly around ZAR 50-65ppn
Dorm - mostly around ZAR 65-120ppn; Dorm rates are very much dependig on the room size (number of beds per dorm) and the season. ZAR 120ppn, for example, is the high season rate for a bed in a dorm in Cape Town.
Single room - mostly around ZAR 110-220; some hostels have single rooms, some others don't. If you really want to have a single room and they don't have one, they normally give you a double room where you can sleep in alone (which is not changing the rate for the double room)
Double/Twin room - mostly around ZAR 165-250/room. Again depending on the season of the year and other stuff like TV, private bathroom, en suite (or not) etc.

Try to get hold of a free copy of 'Coast to coast', its a good guide to whats available in the SAfrican region. They have a web-site: www.coastingafrica.com<BR>Ndlovu

You will find the prices of Dorms in the country backpackers are cheaper than those in the cities. As ndlovu said, grab hold of a Coast to Coast or look at there website, for more up to date prices. Another great site on backpacker rates would be to visit Alternative Route Backpackers
