does anyone know anything about the massingir trail from letaba (in kruger) to massingir (in great limpopo)? i'm contemplating doing the hike towards the end of december and am particularly interested in many websites a) referring to this as a "wilderness area" -- what does that even mean? and b) describing this as a place where "large game was re-introduced" a few years ago -- how to interpret that?

i believe all of the other trails in kruger -- napi, metsimetsi, bushman, etc -- are closed that time of year due to the heat. and the wonderful mozman just posted a message on his website saying that the formally-organized trips in gorongosa have recently come to a halt. so, i think massingir is my best option for a no-car bring-your-own-stuff camping and hiking adventure in the presence of large game. yes? no? i'd love some input from y'all. even if it's just input on what to expect game-wise around letaba that time of year. (i've seen posts, especially from RudiK, that praise letaba; but most of them were made around june.)

and i'm fully aware that late-december is not an optimal time to be hiking anywhere in these parts. but i'm playing host to a couple of fellas with inflexible american schedules. so it'll have to do! many thanks in advance

Hi Luke

Wilderness area refers to natural areas that are not impacted by mans influence. ie completely untouched and natural

The re-introduction occured with the start of the transfrontier park, as before that there was little to no game on the mozambique side due to years of civil war.

Ive done the Olifants and Bushmans trails, and they were awesome. Even if you dont see much - the interpretation by the ranger guide is great, and well worth it.

i imagine the massingir trail will be cool, with perhaps less big game - but shouldnt deter you from doing it ...

Cheers

Kruger's walks are open through out the year. All ht ewilderness trainl has a base camp. You walk early morning and return around 11. hav a nap till 3 and start again untill sunset.

massingir is different in that you have no base camp. You have to carry everything and sleep in your own made camp every night. Rougher than the wilderness trails.

Walking in KRUGER was probably one of the most exhillarating experiences you will ever have. it is Awesome
