For an individual who wants to see as much wildlife as possible- what tours, companies would you recommend? I will have 3 or 4 days to do the tour depending on the price.

Or do people have more success seeing wildlife just renting a car and driving around?

thanks,
rih

If you have a short time and want to maximize your wildlife viewing, I would suggest doing a safari in the Sabi Sands reserve that is part of the greater Kruger park.

It will cost more than doing it on your own, but it's only a couple of nights and with an experienced guide and tracker you will see more too.

Not all lodges there are terribly expensive; Elephant Plains, for example, is reasonable and has a good rep.

Just rent a car and drive yourself around. Do a sunset drive and a morning bush walk from one of the camps where you stay. I recommend 2 nights in Satara and I night in Lower Sabie. If you have another night stay at Letaba for your first night. Enter at either Orpen or Phalaborwa, depending on where you stay the first night. Exit at Crocodile Bridge. That way you will (IMHO) maximise your chances of seeing game. However, there are never any guarantees - it is not a zoo. Have a look at the Parks Board web-site and check accommodation availability and make your bookings well in advance. August is a popular month for the park, even though it is not school holidays.
