I recently booked a SA trip (Dec 2007) and need to know wether
UK driving license is sufficient or do I need an IDL.
Looking at AA web-site implies one IS needed - can anyone confirm - also
what type - their is a 1929 style and well as a 1946 style!
Thanks in advance

We (New zealanders) were there in July and just needed our domestic licence. I think as long as it has your photo it's fine.

An IDP (Int. Driving Permit) is NOT required, if your licence is in English (which it obviously is!) and has your photo. That's the short answer. If you want all the background detail, including chapter and verse from the relevant Act, there were recently two long threads about this. One of them is here.
If you are travelling from the UK and have the bog standard European (pink) driving license ? Then yes you need an International License. Available from Main Post offices, RAC and AA offices !

If you have the pink uk 'credit card' size licence with photo on that is fine - i've been stopped in roadblock and presented mine, no problem
As ArthurSA says - in english with photo

If you're renting a car, check the fineprint. My auto club advises me that it's recommended but not necessary. Travelogues give me the same story so I figured I did not need one. I've driven in many countries before and not needed one. However, the fine print on the car rental indicates that an IDL is a requirement to hire the vehicle so I'll have to get one. Grr.
Arthur, the only thing on my 'bog standard European (pink) license' is PENALTY POINTS !!!!

Well we certainly don't want drivers on our roads who have "PENALTY POINTS !!!!". Especially those with an added four exclamation marks. That sounds even be worse than a combi taxi driver with no licence. And I didn't think that was possible.
Arthur, dont worry to much, the !!!! = £15 per exclamation but only 0.75 per penalty point (f%&k!%g speed camera's) So im not a total lunatic on the road, and even better than that, as im the male of the species I dont multi-task so 'I dont Windhoek and drive'
Do you want me to give you a lift on our Windhoek night ?
