In June next year I will be attending a seminar at a game reserve in Kruger National Park. I fly into Johannesburg 4 days prior to the seminar. Can anyone give me some ideas of a 3/4 day itinerary for this period. I have researched Johannesburg and am not convinced it is a safe place (please forgive me if I offend anyone in this respect). After the seminar I will be spending 7 days in Cape Town so that it covered. Is Durban an option?

I'll be grateful for any help/advice for these 4 days.

Thanks

I wouldn't say that Johannesburg is more dangerous than other big cities around the world, especially if you don't venture into areas that are specifically unsafe. I've lived in Pretoria and Johannesburg my whole life (except 1 year) and I've never been the victim of a crime. The people I know who've been victims of crime did things like leave valuables lying around, they didn't lock doors when they should have or they were in places that are specifically unsafe. The safety issue is often sensationalized and exaggerated by the media and sometimes expats. If you stay in an area like Sandton or Rosebank, take the Gautrain to Park Station and do the City Sightseeing tour with the Soweto extension or a different organized tour the chances are low that anything bad will happen.

In my opinion Johannesburg isn't the most interesting place in SA though and I would recommend it if you like cities/urban landscapes and are interested in history. Other things you can do is visit the Drakensberg for hiking and stunning scenery, do a Sani Pass day tour to Lesotho, fly to George and visit Knysna with its lagoon and indigenous forests, fly to Port Elizabeth and visit some places on the Wild Coast. Durban is an option (it's not necessarily safer than Joburg though) and is interesting because of the Indian influence and there are some nice beaches in towns around it. You can also consider St Lucia and the iSimangaliso Park.

I hope this helps! :-)

Thank you lidia, this exactly what I was looking for, it is very helpful. I do have an enormous interest in history but wetlands and UNESCO World Heritage sites have greater appeal. So I will be researching iSimangaliso Park further.

Thanks again

I used to be afraid of Johannesburg, part of that is because of media, and the other part is that the first time I visited SA with my friend (we were 24 years old)everyone we met were practically hysterical just of the thought of us walking 200 m in Sandton. I've always felt that locals knows best, so we listened to their advice and took a taxi everywhere. I'm still not sure that their advice was bad (this was 11 years ago)but I've since felt safe in Jo'burg. But I'm not sure it's the most interesting place in SA.

Another option is renting a car and drive up to Blyde River Canyon, and spend a day or two exploring there. I would always suggest more safari, but that's because I love Kruger.
