Hi All,
I am trying to plan a trip for the end of October for 2weeks to SA but to be honest don’t know where to start with my itinerary.
I know for sure that I want to do a safari!! and also i initially thought of going to Capetown and Garden route. But as my days are limited I don’t want to waste my time in airports or in a car.

What advice can you give me to come up with an itinerary that will be on a budget and i get to see to see lots in 15days.
Also would you recommend spending more time around Capetown and garden route? Then around Kruger given my limited amount of time?
Nothing is booked yet so I am open for all suggestions.
Thanks

As you have much more to see and to do for two weeks, why don't you read a guidebook first ?
You have a lot of possibilities for your itinerary and it will be better to choose by yourself.
My points of interest are not yours...

Like i said i am open to all suggestions. I need advise re planning out routes, whether to go by car or internal flights and which way is the more economical.

So far my list of interest are;
Around Capetown:
Table Mountain, Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, Boulders Beach, Cape Point, Chapman's Peak drive.

Near Kruger;
Pilgrim's Rest, God's Window, Blyde River Canyon

If you can, make your international flight in to Cape Town and out from Johannesburg (or vice versa).

Next you'll need to check on the availability of accommodation in Kruger. You'll need one day for the Panorama route and about 5 days in Kruger (preferable in 2 or 3 different camps).

Then you'll need either a flight from Cape Town to Nelspruit or to Johannesburg (cheaper but then its a 4 hour drive to Kruger). Or vice versa in you're doing Kruger first.

For Cape Town, you can leave it flexible but you're probably looking at 1 day peninsula tour, 1 day table mountain, 2 days winelands, 1 day robben island + waterfront.

hey
thanks for your reply ghalied
However for the flights my problem is after searching for hours I found that a return flight is costing me a lot cheaper than two one way flights. As in a one way to Capetown is almost the same or more than a return. (Its krazy)

So if i am to save money on flights i would be better off buying a return ticket.

If i fly too and from Johannesburg would it be best to rent a car and go to Kruger or fly.

Also have you heard of the bazbus hop on hop off tours would you recommend doing this?

So, two weeks. You can do a lot in two weeks with a bit of planning. My suggestion is that you fly in and out of Jo'burg, that usually saves you a lot of money. But you also need to save time to get the maximum out of your stay, so flights in South Africa are quite cheap.

Plan A:

  1. Arrive in Johannesburg early morning(?)catch a flight to Cape Town
  2. Cape Town
  3. Cape Town
  4. Cape Town
  5. Cape Town
  6. Cape Town
  7. Cape Town-Nelspruit early morning. Pick up a car at the airport, shop some food, go to Crocodile Bridge
  8. Kruger Lower Sabie or Skukuza
  9. Kruger Lower Sabie or Skukuza
  10. Kruger Satara
  11. Kruger Satara
  12. Kruger-Nelspruit, stay over in a nice guest house. I recommend Francolin Lodge
  13. Panorama Route
  14. Jo'burg-Home (fly from Nelspruit or drive)

And of course, you can start in Kruger and end in Cape Town. But this is what I would've done.

The itinerary suggested by Cath makes a lot of sense. With 14 days, including Krüger (that would be my first priority), Cape Town (second priority) and the Garden Route is a bit much. The Garden Route is about 850km long, and just driving from Cape Town to P.E. doesnt make sense. You want to be able to stop on the way and see/do things. 4 days would be the absolute minimum I would suggest.

To get a good overview of what is where etc., taking the red hop-on/hop-off bus on your first day in Cape Town is a good idea (the bus will also stop at thecable car station for Table Mountain). For the other places you are looking at, I would do a guided Peninsula tour, it will include Cape Point, Chapmans Peak Drive, Boulders Beach and most probably also Kirstenbosch. For the rest of Cape Town, you dont really need a car. You can walk, take the Metrorail to the False Bay (Muizenberg, Kalk Bay etc.) and the excellent MyCity bus is also a great way to get around.

My IPad I behaving strangely ;-), so here the second part of my answer:
If you like food and markets, and are in Cape Town on the weekend, the Neighbourgoods Market in Woodstock (saturday) and the Bay Harbour Market in Hout Bay (saturday and sunday) are great. And if you are there on the first thursday of october, check out "First Thursday".

In case you want to include 1-2 other destinations, you could for example rent a car for 4 days. Self drive the Peninsula tour, than drive to Hermanus along the sea, spend the night in Hermanus and Whale watch, drive to the Winelands and spend the night there and return to Cape Town to fly to Nelspruit the next morning. Yes, the flight to Nelspruit will be more expensive than flying to Joburg, but that is money well spent in my opinion.

If you want to self-drive in Krüger and overnight in restcamps (which is a great way to visit the park), before you book anything else, check out availability in the restcamps (they are very popular) and build your itinerary around that. Look at the excellent SANP website for rates, information, availability etc. https://www.sanparks.org/parks/kruger/

It seems to be the day I keep adding stuff, haha. When I wrote Cape Town, I meant Cape Town-area including Hermanus, Stellenbosch/Franschhoek, cape peninsula tour, muizenberg etc..depending on your interests.

hi cath and nathalie,

Sorry for late reply have been so busy lately. Thank you so so much for all the advice. Since posting my first post I have extended my trip to 3 weeks :)
So am working on the itinerary some more. I have 11 days so far

Day 1. Arrive in Joburg and rent car
Drive along the panorama route and get accommodation near 'Blyde Canyon'
Day 2.
Go to Blyde Canyon then drive to 'Kruger Park'

Day 3. Kruger safari
Suggested site: 1st night 'Lebata' or 'Satara'

Day4. Kruger safari
Another site: Oliphants or crocodile bridge (also i heard there is a tour at night worth doing? not sure)

Day5. Fly to Capetown
Settle into Capetown walk along 'V+A waterfront' and check out the nightlife :)

Day6
Hop on/off tour around city 'Boo-kap', visit markets

Day7'Table mountain' hike ( get cable car which takes 5min or do a hike for 4hours)

Day8. Day tour with 'Dazbus': 'Cape Peninsula Tour' which includes Hout Bay, Chapmans Peak Drive, Simons Town/boulders beach, cape point, cape of good hope, table mountain national park.

Day9. (this i'm not sure of this is it worth seeing??)
'Robben Island' (nelson mandelas prison)

Day 10.
Rent car and visit 'Hermanus' to do some whale watching, then drive to the Winelands and spend the night there.

Day 11.
Visit the winelands

Regarding the Kruger Park, i would like to be logical about which site to stay at. As in should I start in the middle and then move south to be on the move for the return to the airport? and how many days do you think i should spend there?

Also would you recommend going to Vic falls and if so should I go there before Capetown?
