Here's my dilemma - I've prebooked a safari with a company that wants $USD600 per person on the first day for the local payment. This would not be a problem if the first thing I did when stepping off the plane was to go on safari because I could just hand over the cash. However, I am doing some independent travel first for 2 weeks so I don't really want to be carrying large sums of $USD all that time. How would you deal with this? Take traveller's cheques and convert them at a bank the day before the tour? It's all I can think of doing but I don't know how that would work - buy traveller's cheques in $USD in Australia and convert them to $USD cash when in SA? Or can traveller's cheques only be converted to local currency? Is there a better method? I'd love to hear some ideas on how others have handled this situation! Thanks.

Grr. I did read through postings on the various pages and searched before posting and was unable to find any postings dealing with this topic because the search results were so extensive and included many other countries. I decided to wait overnight before posting, get up this morning, add the post and scroll down to find ... another thread about 10 down on the page dealing with this topic. My apologies - I must have somehow missed it in my readings.

I knew it had to have been dealt with before but searches for "USD" have such vague search results. Sorry - I'd retract this thread if I could but I can't so consider it closed. This thread deals with it.

Just a tip- once the results of the search appear, you can narrow your search by clicking on a region/country on the left of the screen.
