Im travelling with my boyfrien to SA in august. We arrive at Cape Town at 17.00 and we intend to drive to Mossel bay, sleep there and in the morning drive to Knysa (we do it in the morning so we can see the views, I think the garden rout starts in Mossel Bay). At around 15.00 drive to Plattengbergh bay and spend the night there. The next day we go to Outdstroom and at about 17 drive to Cape Town through R62 and spend there two more days and two nights. Is this silly? We try to do the worse driving at night. We heard those are the best places in the Garden Route... Thank u very much and excuse my English!!!

The highway death rate is about 5 times worse than Europe and at night you are not unlikely to come across animals and drunks on the road. You will also be driving on the left. There have been some problems with hijacking on the N2 I believe and I don't think I would like to drive the R62 at night. You probably won't have any problems but I wouldn't do it both for safety reasons and because it is too rushed to see much. I get tired just thinking about it. I would spend your time in Cape Town and environs, there's lots to occupy you for several days and there is scenery just as nice as the Garden Route.

I agree with the above. I wouldn't drive at night - besides the safety thing, you wouldn't see anything so whats the point? Spend your time (5 days?) in the Cape Town area, there's plenty to see, and if you want to go further afield go to Hermanus for a night or Stellenbosch/Franschoek which is a lovely area. If you desperately want to see the Garden Route, fly to George and drive from there to Plettenberg Bay or Port Elizabeth, then fly back to Cape Town.

When I say driving at night, I mean from 17.00 to 21.00....My concern is more about in which city should I spend the longest, Knysa, Plattenberg bay or Outdshoorn.... Thank u.

true, the point of the garden route is seeing the scenery while driving. And at night in Africa means - when it's dark - so even if it's "early" if it's dark, it's night.

Hi Rocio, I agree with all of the above TTers, it will bw dark by 18.30 in SA during August. You dont need to be driving to Mosselbay at that time of night, it could take up to 4 hours perhaps more depending on the traffic. There is a 'City lodge' quite close to the airport which would probably suit your needs, not a luxury hotel, but clean and comfortable, and, IMHO you really dont have time to enjoy the garden route in its full glory, in only 2 or 3 days. There is more than enough for you to see, do and enjoy in Cape Town and on the Peninsula, also the wine runs of Stellenbosch (include Speir for either lunch or dinner) or Paarl. Dont try to do too much and ruin a holiday in a place of stunning beauty !

ps your English is pretty good so dont apologise !!!

Drink Windhoek not Castle

Hi

I drove the Garden Route a few years back and I regret that I didn't have more time. So three days sounds a bit short to me.
