Hello All,

Shortly, I'll have some time in South Africa, about 2 weeks, and was thinking about driving the garden route. I'm actually currently in Johannesburg, but have a car. I though I'd take a week from Johannesburg to cape, spending most of it in Cape Town, then set out on the garden route, then drive back to Johannesburg.

My question: has anyone done this? Does this seem like a reasonable itinerary? Are there any must see spots on the garden route? I enjoy a mix of hiking, nature, and city, but also want to take my time and make it a relaxing few weeks. Definitely see some of the wine farms near Cape Town.

I'll be traveling alone, late twenties female. Are there safety concerns? I found some organized tours - is it necessary to take these?

My husband and I (seniors) drove this route a few years ago in a camperized truck. There were no security concerns beyond what there would be in any other country we travel through. There are idiots everywhere so one always needs to be cautious and situationally aware. I posted trip notes and photos on my website http://www.lifewellspent.com Just scroll down to "Afria" and go to the section on the garden route. There should be lots of ideas there for you. It's an exceedingly scenic route. One of my favourite drives in the world.

For Joburg to Cape Town and back, two weeks can be a little tight if you're driving it all the way. I'd say take a week and a half to work your way down to Cape Town via the Garden Route and winelands and then fly back to Johannesburg. (https://goo.gl/pPLXG2 - includes all my favourite places) That's still a lot of driving for two weeks though so most people would cut out the Garden Route in favour of doing Kruger and the Panorama Route and fly to Cape Town from either Nelspruit, Johannesburg or Durban.

Hi there . We did this drive a few months ago. Definitely doable. Especially if you don't mind driving long hours. Some things to consider though. I wouldn't drive late at night if you can avoid it. But I'm sure since you are in Johannesburg you are aware of that. Check out our post on the drive. http://www.beardandcurly.com/garden-route-rt-62/

Cheers!
