Can anyone recommend BBs/hotels/guesthouses in the following places that are centrally located or within easy/safe walking distance of restaurants:

Franschoek(Stellenbosch)/Knysna/Tsitsikamma national park/Oudtshoorn (or any other attractive places near Cape Town or along the Garden route).

Lower end of the price scale, please.

In Cape Town I'm thinking of booking Breakwater Lodge right on the Waterfront as that seems to be safe with lots of eating options nearby. Any comments on that?

I'm starting to put together an itinerary, but further to my other post about safety, having to drive everywhere in the evening would be a real downer as we're keen on sampling (more than one glass) of some great South African wine over dinner. I've already looked at a lot of B
Bs online, but many seem to be located well out of town or it's not exactly clear what's nearby.

Thanks!

Breakwater Lodge or the Commodore are your best not-as-expensive Waterfront options. Or you could go for a self catering apartment there. There are no guesthouses or B & B's in the Waterfront.

Here are our tried and true Garden Route favourites.

Of course in the Tsitsikamma National Park you'll struggle to be within walking distance of town, but the restaurant is on-site at Storms River Mouth!

In Oudtshoorn I would stay out of town on one of local ostrich farms and eat there.

yeah, better forget driving in the evening. It is NOT recommended in South Africa!!! too much animals, people, not enough lights on the road

We just came up the Garden Route and have stayed the last few nights at a backpackers called Bayside in Betty's Bay. The two guys running it are in there third week of business so you'll be lavished with attention and great service. The views from your bed are uninterupted atlantic ocean wnd there are plenty of Whales in there at this time of year. We did amazing sundowners in the sand dunes, a really cheap surf lesson and if it hadn't been for the rain, we were planning to go sandboarding from there too. It's only around 40 mins fom Hermanus so if you want to do a shark dive, it's also a good spot. Anyhow, if you're interested you'll find them on the R44 in Betty's Bay.

Enjoy.

Try www.portfoliocollection.co.za they have mainly Guest houses or Hotels, but seem to have some reasonably priced places along the garden route.

I HIGHLY recommend Paradise Backpackers in Oudtshoorn. It's a backpackers, but it's very large and spread out, with many single and double rooms. It's a quiet place, and the staff is super friendly and helpful. It's just on the outskirts of town, so you're close enough to walk, but not right there. They also have dinners each night (ostrich) a bar far away from where the rooms are, and lots of books, braais, and TV if you want to watch some cable.

In Wilderness, the Beach Backpackers is very nice too. Although a backpackers, they have beautifull double rooms with view on the see, and offer breakfast and dinner.
