Hi!
we will be in Cape Town in january for a couple of days, we are a couple with a toddler(3½) and an infant (6months), and we rented a car. We were thinking of maybe staying in BoKaap in a b&b for our first days in SA and I was wondering if the area is safe enough and if parking will be a hassle?

We are flying late on the 11 and we have to meet friends in Muizenberg on the 15, We will stay there for a couple more nights, vsisit the area (Simon's town, go to the wineland, etc.) and then it the road to get to Wilderness and so and so. (w'll be in SA for a month)

so I guess my question is, we want to explore Cape Town a bit, but since w'll be jet lag and arriving at night we don't want too much hassle for our first nights, (we can always go back to Cape town on our way back...) So is going to BoKaap a good idea or you would recommend another area?
thanks!
any other advices are welcome!

i like the bo kaap, but i'm not sure that i would choose it as a "first stay destination". during the day, walking around the main streets is fine, but if you go into smaller side streets, you might sometimes get a "not totally safe" feeling. not actually dodgy, and nothing ever happened to me, but a gut feeling that tells me to go back to the main streets.

personally, i would choose a place in gardens / tamboerskloof or oranjezicht. a lot of quiet and beautiful residential streets, plenty of lovely guesthouse, b&b's, hotels and hostels (for all budgets), often great views of table mountains, many restaurants and shops in easy walking distance (especially in gardens, in the two other places it depends on where you stay at), and safe to walk around, also in the evening.

parking is difficult in all above mentionned places (including the bo kaap). you dont really need (or want) a car to visit cape town, its easy to walk around, take the bus or a taxi. i would consider not renting a car for the first few nights, and only pick it up before you go to meet your friends in muizenberg.

Thanks Nathalie, I'll look more into gardens area and we'll see if we can change our car rental pick-up... your comment totally makes sense, we can grab a cab from the airport and only pick up our car on the 15 when we will be leaving town...

while I'm here, do you know if there's bike rental that also rent kids seats or chariots? we would love to bike a bit in the wineland area?

many thanks
Véronique
