Hello,
Could anyone tell us what the best way to get from Cape Town to Johannesburg is in 10days? We want to travel up the coast but will we have time for this? Any advice would be much appreciated, thanks.

It depends - as far as cost is concerned - there is a bus service but it's pretty unpleasant, if you can afford it the best thing to do is to hire a car in Cape Town (with air con) and then drive up the coast - easily done in ten days.
the route to take would be from CT up the coast to East London (visit Gonubie beach), then cut inland to Colesburg, you DO NOT WANT to travel through the Transkei, bad roads, dangerous drivers.
Hit Colesburg - very nice B&B there, then head to Jhb - 6 hours by car.
Spend 8 days going slowly up the coast and enjoy it - one day to Colesburg, one day to Jhb. Did this last year and was nice, though a lot of the Garden route is very tourist orientated, back when I was young and foolish I walked from East London to Durban with some friends - took three weeks - probably illegal now!
Need anything else let me know.

but the transkei is so Beautifull !

This is what I would have done: Please start the morning sharp.
Take the N1 out of Cape Town,go to Franschoek (just off the Stellenbosch turn-off).Get back to Stellenbosch.Visit Stellenbosch.Travel to Strand, then Gordons Bay.Visit both.Take scenic route by going through GordonsBay around the mountain R44,not the N2. Go through Rooiels,Pringle Bay ,Hangklip,
Betty's Bay ,Kleinmond then R43 to Onrus,Hermanus. Go halfway back to Onrus, get onto R320 to Caledon.Just before Caledon, turn onto R406 to Genadendal and Greyton (very sweet village). If you like,
you can sleep there or Hermanus If you want to stop at all the places i've mentioned. Then back onto R406 to Riviersonderend after Greyton (make sure you take the same road - tar-I think the shortcut is gravel). Past Riviersonderend turn right onto R317 to Bredasdorp and onto R316 to Arniston - back to Bredasdorp -travel to Struisbaai and L'Agulhas-back to Bredasdorp.Travel R319 to Swellendam and visit it.Maybe sleep there. Now you must decide here:Either travel to Barrydale-Ladismith-Calitzdorp-Oudtshoorn (Route 62)sleep there- OR travel further N2 .turn off at R322 Witsand visit it.back to N2Past Riversdale turn onto R305 to Stilbaai and Jongensfontein.back to N2 toMossel Bay.Sleep there. There is so much.Travel to OUdtshoorn and De Rust from Mosselbay when enough of MosselBay.
sleep there one night or 2 in OUdtshoorn.(I would skip Route 62 )Travel to George,Knysna.Sleep Knysna.See the place. This can take 5-6 days in total.Do the coastal
route further right along N2 up to East London for 3-4 days.Theres PlettenbergBay,Jeffreys Bay,St.Francis
Bay (A MUST) ,take the beachfront of P.E and carry on to Grahamstown and Kenton-on-Sea.Back to N2
,East-London (drive beachfront) and go to Gonubie,Cintsa.Get back onto N2 to King Williamstown,Fort Beaufort, onto Cradock. From Cradock back to Middelburg to either Bloemfontein /Jhb or Kimberley/Jhb.
I would go Kimberley.Lovely quiet road, feels safer. Used to drive it a lot.See Websites:
www.sacape.co.za from Cape Town ,Cape Winelands, Route 62,Overberg, And Eastern Cape Coastal and country Routes. Hope this has helped. You should decide yourself from Knysna onwards. See websites.
Good Luck and Happy Travels. Greetings from Western Cape.

the transkei is awesome - sure the eastern cape roads aren't great but if you drive during the day only it is ok

Did you make any negative experiences in the Transkei or what makes you recommending not going there?

In 10days from Jozi to Cape Town? hm, spend some days in Jozi (search the TT for Rudi's "what to do in Jozi list") and then either take the train or a flight down to Cape Town (Cape Town & surroundings) for the rest of your time in SA. IMO 10 days is not enough (as a tourist who wants to see as much as possible) to drive all the way along the coast, coz you are missing out too many places just coz you don't have enough time. And you will be on the road about every day...

Re the Transkei : there is nothing wrong with main roads through the Transkei. The N2 between East London and Durban is excellent and the R61 to Port St Johns (both directions - north to KwaZulu Natal and west to Umtata) was upgraded a couple of years ago. The roads that are bad (sometimes very bad) are the minor roads from the N2 to the small villages on the coast. But driving through on the N2 or R61 is no problem at all. However, don't do this at night and don't speed - sometimes there are cows and horses on the road and you need to be able to stop in time and avoid them.
Assuming you have your own or a hired vehicle, you are never more than 2 days from your destination and at a push you could do it in one day. So don't panic about having only 10 days - when time starts running out (after 8 days or so on the road), that's when you decide to skip the rest and go straight to Johannesburg. In between - take your time and enjoy yourselves.
