Hello,

1. Would anyone happen to know whether SANParks organise tours to Kruger? We are going to South Africa in the first week of December (totally unplanned trip that just happened to come along! :-) ) and want to stay in the camps inside Kruger, but don't want to do the self drive option or go with any luxury tour operators. I've gone through the Viva and Livingstonetrails websites which are an option.

2. We will be flying into Cape town - will it be better to fly to J'berg or Nelspruit to go onward to Kruger?

3. What's really the best way to see Cape Town - is it by hiring a car and losing one's way or taking bus tours? (We will be taking a bus tour to the Wineland). If we want to see the Cape Peninsula on our own, is the road relatively easy to follow?

Thanks so much for your assistance.

  1. I've done Viva (with the treehouses) and loved it. My profile has my blog address; go to the Viva Safaris tag for details.

    2. Yes

    3. Rent a car, with the option of a group tour to the wineries (so that you don't have to worry about drinking and driving). The Cape Peninsula route is easy..

  1. Depend how much time you have to get there - check Kulula, mango and 1time for cheap flights
    3. Hiring a car in CT is great. I went to the Cape peninsula and the road is pretty easy to follow, yes. don't miss chapman's peak (or smthg similar) it's a seenic road going to the peninsula. You can also stop in Simon's town to see the penguins.
I was the only driver and my bf couldn't read a map - but we survived and I would do it again that way!!!
TIP - lunch options are scares once in the park - eat before or bring your lunch, but be aware of the baboons (like the 300 signs told you !! :)
It is not that much cheaper to do it with your car though - we park entries, gaz and renting sharing between 2 persons, you don't actually safe much - but if you like to be flexible and free, it's the way to go

Very seriously, watch out for the baboons. They aren't afraid of people and have been known to come up to people and take things out of their hands...

Thanks all for your responses- really looking forward to our trip. Without meaning to sound completely idiotic, is it safe to drive alone along the Cape Penninsula road. Anything to watch out for (apart from the baboons?)

Yup the road is fine to cape point and there are lovely places to stop on the peninsula - kalk bay and st james, (dare i mention fish hoek beach) simonstown, penguins at boulders, long beach at noordhoek.

don't feed the baboons either as the signs tell ya! wind up the windows if you get out to take in a view point etc.

There is nothing really to look out for saftey wise. Cape Tonians do not really use their indicators - i am constantly shouting to myself about this when behind the wheel!
General driving there are a lot of stop streets (ie 2/3 and 4 way stops) and at traffic lights there are often turning arrows to filter traffic. i don't know where you are from so i don't know what you are used to. Chapmans Peak drive has been closed at the mo but if you drive down the False Bay side to Cape Point and back the Atlantic Seaboard side there is a sign indicating whether it is open at the turning for Noordhoek - worth it if it is open otherwise just carry on over Silvermine.

enjoy

Chapmans peak drive is closed? Why? It is such a beautiful scenic route!
